A Message from Dorothy, Read at Dad's Memorial Service on Friday 26/02/2010 - 2.00 pm - at St. Mary's Church, East Barnet

A Message from Dorothy As you have heard, Ray was a hard-working man, who was devoted to his family but I would like to take this opportunity to tell you how brave and courageous he was, fighting Motor Neurone Disease as well as other pre-existing medical conditions. After being diagnosed with MND in February 2009, Ray lost the use of his hands and arms, which meant that everyday tasks such as shaving, washing, writing an eating became a challenge for him, from being a very independent man – he became reliant on the care and assistance of others. As the disease progressed, Ray began to have difficulty swallowing and his legs weakened, leading to falls and meaning that as a result, Ray became more and more confined to his bedroom. Despite facing a cruel and frightening disease, Ray never asked “Why Me?” instead he was saddened to see children and young adults, just beginning life, also fighting a terminal illness. Throughout his illness, Raymond and I have had a great support network from the Hospital, occupational therapist, dear Caroline from MND, our great friend and carer Francis and the Hospice. What fantastic people and what brilliant work they do! Finally, to our Children and Grandchildren, Ray wanted me to thank you for all the love and help you gave him and ask you to remember that he loved you all very much.
